Shutters – Turn Dull Lifeless Windows Into Sheer Beauty

That’s a rather general title, isn’t it? Let’s break it down a little and see what shutters really are.

Plantation Shutters

These are louvred door panels hung on an outer frame that are fitted to your windows or within the window recess. These shutters were popular across Europe in cities like Paris, Prague and Milan and are now being fitted all over the UK. They come in three main styles – Tier on Tier, Café and Full Height and can be made in hardwood, MDF, vinyl and very occasionally aluminium.

Solid Panel Shutters

Solid panel shutters were used a lot in Victorian times where they were an integral part of a sash window.  They are still sometimes referred to as Victorian shutters. These, too, come in the same three styles as plantation shutters but instead of louvres they have, as the name suggests, solid wood shutter panels. These are only available in hardwoods.

Tier on Tier Shutters

Tier on Tier shutters cover the full height of the window and are divided into two separate sections – lower and upper – which can be opened independently. These shutters are the most versatile when it comes to light control and privacy. As well as the louvres opening separately the door panels can also be opened independently.

Cafe Style Shutters

These cover the lower part of your window and are used solely for the purpose of privacy. These were generally fitted in cafes and restaurants to shield diners from people outside looking in, hence their name. Nowadays they are more often used by householders in houses close to pavements or roads to prevent passersby from invading their privacy.

Full Height Shutters

Full height shutters, like Tier on Tier, cover the full height of the window but the difference is the doors open as one piece although the louvres can be separated with a divider rail allowing each section to tilt independently.

All our shutters are available in a choice of seven different materials, from the very affordable MDF shutters to our top of the range Cedarwood. They are available in a wide array of painted and stained finishes although white is the colour chosen by the vast majority of our customers.

Plantation or Solid panel shutters are fast becoming the number one choice as a window covering, they are beautiful visually and with the added benefits of simple light control, good insulation properties and the often overlooked security aspect it’s not difficult to see why.
