Choosing your shutters

Which shutters are best for kitchens and bathrooms?

Composite shutters are our usual starting point for moisture-prone rooms because of their water-resistant construction. We assess the fitting position, ventilation and exposure to moisture at your consultation. A kitchen window away from splash areas may also suit a wood range; the right choice depends on the room rather than its name alone.

How much light do blackout shutters block?

Ordinary louvred shutters reduce light when closed, but they are not a complete blackout covering: light can enter around the panels and between louvres. Our blackout option combines shutters with a manually operated blackout blind behind them for stronger light reduction. We assess the opening and explain the expected result rather than promise a completely light-free room.

Will shutters make my room dark during the day?

You control the light by tilting the louvres or opening the panels. Frames and louvres occupy part of the opening, so some daylight is reduced even with the louvres open. Café-style shutters leave the upper window uncovered; tier-on-tier shutters allow the upper panels to open separately. We help you balance daylight and privacy.

Which louvre size is best?

There is no single best size. We compare the available sizes, commonly 64mm, 76mm and 89mm depending on the range, against your window proportions, view and privacy preferences. Larger louvres mean fewer slats across the height of a panel. We also check clearance for the louvres to tilt around handles and the window itself.

Price and planning

Are shutters expensive?

The price depends on the window size, material, panel layout and additional options. Our current guide prices start at £260/m² for Hardwood, £290/m² for Hardwood ABS, £350/m² for Premium Hardwood and £345/m² for our faster Composite option, including installation for local projects. A £450 local minimum order applies. Custom finishes, shaped openings and other specifications affect the final quotation.

How long does the process take?

After your consultation, we prepare the specification and quotation. Once the order is confirmed, our faster Composite option usually takes around four weeks; Hardwood and Hardwood ABS usually take 10–11 weeks, and Premium Hardwood and the alternative Composite option usually take 10–12 weeks. These are typical timings, not guaranteed dates. Appointment availability, manufacturing, transport and fitting arrangements can affect the overall schedule.

Can I get a price idea before booking a consultation?

Yes. Our quick estimate gives an initial guide for one window using its width and height. It includes local installation, with a £450 local minimum order. It is not a final quotation: material, layout, options and location still need to be confirmed. You can also call or email with a rough size and your postcode before arranging a consultation.

Comfort, security and your home

Can shutters help keep my home cooler in summer?

Closing or angling the louvres when direct sunlight reaches the window can shade the room and reduce glare. This may help with comfort, but the result depends on the glazing, orientation, ventilation and how the shutters are used. We do not promise a particular temperature reduction or an alternative to ventilation.

Can shutters help keep my home warmer in winter?

Closed shutters can add a layer at the window and help reduce heat loss. The benefit varies with the shutter design, fit and existing glazing; it is not a guaranteed saving on heating bills. Shutters do not seal a draughty window, so draught-proofing and insulation still matter.

Will shutters reduce noise from a nearby road?

A closed shutter may change how sound feels in the room, but we do not offer standard shutters as an acoustic treatment or promise a measurable reduction in traffic noise. Noise can pass through glazing, gaps and other parts of the building. If road noise is your main concern, we recommend assessing the windows and acoustic options separately.

Do shutters improve security or deter thieves?

Standard plantation shutters are window coverings, not a security barrier, and we do not claim that they prevent a break-in or deter thieves. We also offer a separate aluminium security shutter range. For that range, we confirm the construction and locking specification for the product quoted. Keep suitable window locks and other home security measures in place.

Will shutters help sell my property?

Well-chosen shutters can give rooms a finished appearance and may appeal to buyers who like their privacy and light control. Preferences vary, so we cannot promise that shutters will make a property sell faster. Choose them primarily for the comfort and appearance you want in your own home.

Will shutters add value to my property?

We cannot guarantee an increase in the sale value or that you will recover their cost. Property value depends on many factors. Shutters are best considered a made-to-measure improvement for your enjoyment of the home rather than a guaranteed financial return.

Aftercare and future changes

What if I need to replace my windows after shutters are fitted?

We offer a shutter removal and refitting service. Contact us before the window work is booked so we can discuss access and the proposed replacement windows. We remove the shutters and return to refit them after the new windows are installed. The charge depends on the work involved; there is no fixed price. If the opening, dimensions or window profiles change, the existing shutters may need alteration or may no longer fit.

How long are the warranties?

Hardwood and Premium Hardwood shutters have a five-year warranty. Hardwood ABS and Composite shutters have a ten-year warranty. Blackout blinds have a separate two-year warranty. Covered repairs include labour and travel, subject to the warranty terms. Cover applies to the original customer and cannot be transferred to a new owner. Aluminium shutters have a ten-year warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship, with repair or replacement of affected shutters at no cost for covered defects.
